5 Travel Skincare Dilemmas (and How to Beat Them for That Radiant Vacation Glow)
We all hope that our vacations will be filled with stress-free days and sparkling selfies. You know, the ones that just radiate that ‘I’m-on-vacation-and-loving-it!’ glow.
Unfortunately, skincare woes can put a sudden dent in your plans. From flare-ups at 30,000 feet to sudden and unsightly blemishes, chances are you’ve experienced some skincare dilemmas of your own while on vacation.
The good news is that just a tiny bit of time and effort can head them off at the pass, and leave you looking radiant. As a frequent traveler, I’ve found some quick, easy and effective ways to banish these skincare disasters forever.
Dilemma One: The skincare routine that totally goes out the window, along with your worries and responsibilities.
This is a problem that has plagued me more than I’d like to admit, especially while I was in my early 20s.
While my ‘at-home’ skincare routine needed a flowchart to decipher, it was a different story while traveling. It seemed the moment that my passport came out of hiding, my commitment to skincare totally disappeared.
It’s certainly easy to be tempted out for another round of tapas and sangria in Barcelona, and then fall into bed having totally forgotten to take care of your skin.
Of course, this is a really bad idea. Especially as someone with sensitive skin, changes to my usual routine are never good – and abandoning it totally is a recipe for total disaster.
Luckily, I have found the perfect solution in the form of all-in-one skincare. With just a few pumps of my VENN Age-Reversing All-In-One Concentrate, my skin is beautifully moisturised and toned. It takes just a few minutes and my skin looks tight, glowing and even – leaving plenty of time for tapas and skincare.
Dilemma Two: Skincare disasters at 30,000 feet.
Have you ever found yourself admiring the perfect makeup of flight attendants, even at the end of a long-haul international flight? Or perhaps marvelled over candid snaps of off-duty supermodels strolling through the airport, looking like they’ve just stepped off the runway after flying halfway across the world?
I used to wonder what kind of magic they were hiding from us mortals, as I’d usually unload from a plane looking far from fabulous. From puffy eyes to dry skin and cracked lips, it was all quite the disaster.
Finally, after the horror of running into an old school friend at my home airport just after a 12-hour haul from Dubai, I decided times needed a-changing. I got to developing an in-flight skincare routine that would actually work.
The thing about an in-flight skincare routine is that it needs to work not only for your skin, but also logistically. Tight restrictions on what liquids you can bring mean stripping back your routine, while no-one wants to be unscrewing multiple bottles in a cramped airplane bathroom.
Again, this is why I love VENN. At 50ml, it easily fits in hand luggage, and its convenient pump bottle means there’s no risk of spillage. Plus, being an all-in-one product, it is so easy and quick. Just apply once before flying and once just before you land (depending on the length of the flight, of course!).
I may not quite look like Gigi Hadid when I disembark, but there’s definitely a marked improvement!
Dilemma Three: The obstacle of switching climates, not just time zones.
Unless you’re one of those ultra-lucky people whose skin always behaves, chances are climate impacts your complexion. My own high-maintenance skin will take any excuse to throw a tantrum, and a shift in seasons is definitely one such risk-factor.
It’s not easy adjusting to the slow change of seasons; so quickly hopping through two or three of them is a down-right dilemma.
Coming from Australia, it’s a dilemma I’m all too familiar with. A two week trip to Europe in July means going from the chilly Aussie winter to the dry European summer; often with a stopover in humid Asia along the way.
This has previously resulted in an oh-so-attractive combination of dry skin and break-outs. Delightful.
The secret here is finding a good, all-round product that your skin will love, whatever the weather. I’ve found the simplicity and stability of gentle wipes plus my VENN Age-Reversing All-In-One Concentrate has gone a long way in helping my skin handle the changing climate.
Dilemma Four: Goodbye hydration, hello dryness!
We all dream of logging out of our work computers, stepping onto the beach and just glowing. Unfortunately, nothing bursts this bubble quicker than dry skin.
Speaking from a wealth of experience, dry skin can leave you looking less youthful, more stressed and just kind of lifeless – exactly the opposite of how you’re probably feeling on vacation!
Unfortunately, vacations can present the perfect storm of factors to cause dehydration and dryness.
You’re probably spending a lot more time outdoors, often drinking less water (and maybe more cocktails) and maybe even getting sunburnt. Then there’s problem #1 – the tendency to get rather lax about skin care while in vacation mode.
Drinking plenty of water (especially if you’re also drinking alcohol) will help combat those obvious signs of dehydration. However, it does only go so far, so I recommend a really good quality moisture-rich product like VENN’s Age-Reversing All-In-One Concentrate.
Apply it liberally day and night, even if you’re not seeing obvious signs that your skin is lacking hydration. I especially like applying it just after a shower, for even more hydration. You’ll be glowing in no time!
Dilemma Five: Blemishes and breakouts, oh no!
Just as dry skin can put a stop to those Insta-worthy snaps, so too can breakouts. From redness to full-on acne, travel is notorious for causing unsightly blemishes. Needless to say, whether you’re traveling for business or pleasure – it’s less than ideal.
Like with dryness, the issue is that travel can present many risk factors for breakouts. From trying delicious food made with unfamiliar ingredients to changing your sleep pattern and sitting for hours in stale plane air, there are plenty of factors that can cause a skin flare-up.
Again, consistency is important here. While I would never, ever advocate for skipping any travel experiences (the more unusual spices, the better!), keeping a consistent skincare routine is important. Again I’m a big proponent of an all-in-one, non-clogging formula here as I like to keep things simple and consistent.
With these tips, you can make sure you’re radiating that vacation glow – without missing out on too much time at all.
